Corporate values are useful when they influence decisions. If values live only on posters or in a presentation, employees quickly stop believing them.
What makes a value real
A real value is visible in choices: whom the company promotes, what behavior managers tolerate, how conflicts are resolved, how clients are treated and how mistakes are discussed.
If the company declares openness but punishes people for speaking about problems, the real value is silence. If the company declares teamwork but rewards only individual competition, the real value is personal result.
Values and management
Managers are the main carriers of values. Employees watch how managers act under pressure. Culture is formed not by speeches, but by repeated decisions.
Therefore values should be translated into management practices: feedback, meetings, hiring criteria, onboarding, recognition and conflict resolution.
How to discuss values
Use concrete examples. Ask: what behavior supports this value? What behavior contradicts it? What will we do if a high-performing employee violates it? Answers to these questions make values operational.
