A group interview is useful when several candidates need to be observed in the same conditions: communication, initiative, argumentation, leadership, teamwork and reaction to competition.

When it works

Group interviews are suitable for mass hiring, sales roles, service positions, internships and roles where communication is essential. They are less suitable for confidential positions or roles requiring deep individual expertise.

How to organize it

The process must be structured. Candidates should understand the format, timing and tasks. Observers should have criteria and forms for notes; otherwise the loudest candidate may simply look the strongest.

Use tasks that show behavior: discussion, case analysis, role play, presentation or problem solving. The task should be connected with the real role, not just entertaining.

What to observe

Notice who listens, who asks clarifying questions, who helps the group move forward, who interrupts, who dominates without value and who stays silent but gives strong ideas when invited.

A group interview should not humiliate candidates. Respectful facilitation protects the employer brand and gives better assessment data.
